Do you have chronic stomach pains? Bloating? Indigestion? Reflux? Uncomfortable gas? Do you often feel like your belly looks like you are pregnant? Gas, bloating, and stomach discomfort are not normal. Poor digestion is one of the first things I address with all my clients. So many people, whether eating the most nutrient dense diet or eating the SAD (Standard American Diet), can suffer from poor digestion.
MY TOP 3 TIPS TO SUPPORT PROPER DIGESTION
1) Eat in a parasympathetic state. Relax and put phones away while eating. Take a minute to meditate, say thanks, pray, etc. to get your mind and body ready to receive food. When we eat rushed, standing, in a car, or while browsing Facebook or Instagram we do not allow our body to start the chemical process to release enzymes to digest. When we are about to eat, it is time to relax, give the body a moment to get ready to receive food and be nourished.
2) Chew. This is simple, but so often overlooked. Have you ever looked around while at a restaurant and watched someone take a bite of their food, chew about three to five times, and then swallow? This kind of chewing can throw your digestion into an indigestion tailspin. Digestion is a north to south process and chewing is a critical part of this system. Chewing is the first physical step in breaking down your food; this is critical step so you do not overburden your stomach and small intestines in the digestion and breakdown of nutrients.
3) Incorporate probiotic rich foods or a probiotic supplement. Whether you choose to add kombucha, sauerkraut, or kefir to your diet or take a probiotic like, MegaSpore, adding healthy bacteria to your gut flora is an essential part of healthy digestion and supporting healthy gut function.
Common etiology of digestive issues include sympathetic dominance, chronic overeating, h-pylori infection, chronic antacid use, and excess consumption of sugar and refined foods. In practice, my clients address these root cause issues of chronic digestive dysfunction.
